Intimate wedding photography in Amsterdam: a planning guide

Not every wedding needs two hundred guests and a twelve-hour schedule. More and more couples choose something smaller: a city hall ceremony with close family, a dinner with friends, or just the two of you on a quiet canal at sunrise. Intimate weddings feel personal, relaxed and true to who you are. The photos should too. This guide helps you plan the photography for a small wedding in Amsterdam.

What makes intimate wedding photography different

With fewer guests and a looser schedule, there’s more room for real moments. Your photographer can stay close without getting in the way, and you’re not rushing from one formality to the next. The focus shifts from covering everything to capturing what matters: the glances, the laughter, your grandmother’s hands, the walk afterwards. Fewer people also means you can get more variety in portraits without losing time with your guests.

Step 1: decide on the shape of your day

Start by sketching your day, even if it’s simple. Most intimate weddings fit one of these shapes:

  • Ceremony only: one to two hours of coverage for the ceremony, congratulations and a short portrait session.
  • Ceremony and dinner: three to five hours, including getting ready, the ceremony, portraits and the start of dinner.
  • Elopement: just the two of you, sometimes with witnesses, with time for portraits in several locations.

Knowing the shape helps you choose a package and plan the timing around the best light.

Step 2: choose locations with light in mind

Amsterdam is wonderful for wedding photos, but some spots get very busy. A few tips:

  • Go early. Canals and bridges are quiet and beautiful in morning light.
  • Think beyond the centre. Parks, quieter neighbourhoods and spots along the water outside the busiest areas often photograph better and feel more private.
  • Have a rain plan. Covered passages, a café, a museum garden or your venue’s interior make great backups.
  • Keep travel short. Two or three locations within walking distance give you more photos and less stress.

Step 3: plan the timeline

Even a small day benefits from a loose timeline. Build in buffers, especially around the ceremony, since city hall slots can run late. Schedule your couple portraits for the softest light of the day, usually early morning or the hour before sunset. Share the timeline with your photographer and one trusted friend who can keep an eye on time, so you don’t have to.

Step 4: make a short people list

With fewer guests, it’s tempting to skip a list. Make one anyway. Write down the family combinations you want, and any special people who must be photographed. Keep it short, because group photos are best done quickly so everyone can get back to celebrating.

Step 5: think about the details

Small weddings are often full of personal details: a borrowed ring, handwritten vows, flowers from a friend’s garden, a family recipe at dinner. Tell your photographer about them in advance. These details are what make your photos feel like your day, not just a day.

Step 6: choose a photographer you’re comfortable with

At a small wedding, your photographer is practically a guest. Choose someone whose work you love, and whose company you enjoy. Look at full galleries, not only highlights, to see how they capture a whole day. Have a call before booking. If you feel relaxed talking to them, you’ll feel relaxed in front of their camera.

Engagement shoots: a good warm-up

An engagement shoot before the wedding helps you get used to being photographed and to working with your photographer. It also gives you images for invitations or a wedding website. Many couples say it’s the reason they felt at ease on the day itself.

When will we receive our photos?
